DATABASE DRIVEN ASSEMBLY

Further to discussions on current development of a tool to drive routed assemblies by XML lists (https://forum.solidworks.com/message/169649#169649), I was wondering if anyone had successfully driven an assembly from a database using an add-in or API ?

The only time I've really seen database integration is with Driveworks, but that was more to do with getting information for documentation and design parameters etc, not an intelligent parts lists as such.

Process CAD software, Syscad bing one example, are controlled/referenced out of an access database. Does anyone have experience of tapping into a database to drive an assembly parts list? Better still, a route?
