Hi
I am an intern and I have been asked to make a grid like strucutre that will be put together by interlocking slots that are then welded into one piece. So I model the parts up and using mates I have created the grid in the assembly. Now is there a way to use weldments on a normal part and not a tube like structure like I have been seeing on the web? Any help would be much appeciated
I have to appologize, your original description was very clear, but my answer was not comprehensive enough. You can create in the Weldments module of SolidWorks models exactly like the ones in the picture. If you do not need structural members - don't use them!
Weldments are multibody parts, so you can add custom shaped bodies to the part model. Once you use the weldment feature, you can create cut lists, use weldment beads and so on.
In your case, the worflow would be as follows:
1. Add the weldment feature
2. Extrude/revolve/sweep/loft, etc. the solid bodies (your plates)
3. Add weld beads as needed
4. Refine the cutlist
...
Check also the new multibody functionality for sheetmetal parts.
Even more appealing, once you insert a weldment in an assembly, you can include its cut list in the assembly BOM.
