How to make assembly, its parts and its drawings read only in quicker way.
Can we protect assembly, its parts and its drawings with password
Select them all in the windows explorer, right click and select properties and then check the read only option.
No you can't set password to them.
That's true. I was using this option before. Is there any options in Solidworks to make a file or assembly protected.
I know of no other option. Even if someone is changing the part, the assembly will get affected.
If you want more control over your files you should try installing PDMWorks. Easy to install, easy to use. It comes free with Pro and Premium versions. Complete visibility of who changes the files and if you need to you can open earlier versions saved in the vault.
Follow these three steps
1. All the referenced parts will open as 'Read only'. After this if you open an assembly file, all the referenced part models will be read only (Though you can get write access by RMB).
2. While opening the file you can select to open it as 'Read only'
3. Even after opening the file with full access, you can make it 'Read only'
For these you do not need PDM.
We have our SW files stored on a network location, and only one user has access to move the SW files into the folder on the network. Everyone can copy files from this folder, but again, only one user can copy files into this location.
We create an eDrawing of each drawing of every part we create. eDrawings cannot be changed in any way shape or form and the viewing software is free from SolidWorks.
This is what our production people as well as our suppliers use. The real Solidworks files are located in our PDMWorks vault.
