Am I the only one that has trouble with the design table changing? I can open a drawing and some of the dimensions are unattached. When I open the model and then open the design table the dimensions have changed. Has anyone had this experience?
Are you talking about dangling dimensions in your drawing? Which show up as brown.
That statement I am not sure exactly what you are refering to.
If they are just changing on their own I have never experienced that. Is this model associated with an assembly?
I doubt the dangling dimensions are caused by the DT. I have read about dimensions changing but, if I remember correctly, that was usually a PEBCAK error.
Does this problem occur only when using a DT?
Are you creating a few configs manually and then auto-creating the DT?
Are the dimensions being imported from the model (Insert > Model Items) or placed manually in the drawing views?
I just associated "unattached" with dangling.
Maybe I am out in left field.
You do know that you have the option of either blocking edits to dimensions that are in a design table or allowing edits to dimensions to update the design table the next time you enter it? Right click on the design table and select properties to see the options.
I didn't know about this option. I just tried it and when I RC on the table in the feature manager
I got "Feature Properties" and a window poped up showing creation origin.
What am I missing?
Sorry, I was going from memory and did not double check. Right click on the design table in the Feature Manager and choose Edit Feature (not Feature Properties) and the option should show up.
I tried again and this is what I got.
Basically that message says that you already have a copy of the DT open. I have seen issues with various versions of SW & Excel that can cause that. If you don't actually have it open, do you have a running Excel process? If so, kill it and try again. If not, try closing SW and then open ad try again.
No I didn't have any other Excel files open. It was a good thought though.
The error message I usually get is the table can't be open in Office 2007 because Office 2007
already open or something like that. I am paraphrasing, but you probably know what I am talking about.
When I exit Solidworks then it allows me to edit my table again. Never had this issue or a lot of issues
prior to 2010.
I will try this later when I can restat my machine.
You can probably fix that error by doing a repair on your Office. In your start menu, go to Microsoft Office/Microsoft Office Tools/Microsoft Office Diagnostics. Basically after you install SW2010 you go fix your Office install.
or better still... reinstall office (or at least Excel). That's what I had to do to get design tables behaving themselves from SW2010. This routine should follow every patch upgrade also, it seems.
I did that when I was having my problems with Excel inside of Solidworks
and it appeared to have worked, but after a couple of weeks the problem
came back and is still there. Even in SP3.1
Maybe in SP 4.0 it will be fixed.
yes when i talked about unattached dimensions i should have said dangling dimensions. i had this problem with a part model not an assembly, which has 25 different configurations and 25 drawings. the files that i work with can be over 10 years old and could have been developed or modified by any number of users with limited knowledge of solidworks. what i did to correct my problem with this model was to compare the dimensions in the design table to the old drawings. make a change in the design table and reattach the dangling dimension. most of the dimensions needed a .005 to .010 change in the design table to correct the problem. i then blocked changes to the design table. i am hoping this will solve my problem with this file.
thanks for all the help.
