sheet metal tab

i don't do a lot of sheet metal work, so forgive any errors with sheet metal terms.

how do i cut away this tab? i keep getting errors that say "unable to perform a normal cut to this part"

or is there an easier way to build an edge flange which does not run the full length of the edge?
