I have an assembly which I need to cut a part between two other parts. I want to use cut extrude and use a plane to cut the ends of that particular part. But I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do it. Can someone help please, thank you.
Enter Edit Part mode for the Angle
Create a Zero Offset Surface (or Coincident Plane) from the inner face of the I-beam
Use that newly created surface (or Plane) in the Cut With Surface tool
The cutting plane or surface has to be in the part being cut.
Use cut with surface option and use plane as the cutting tool.
Here is a picture of my assy. You can see the end of the angle part sticking out from the I-Beam. I need to to cut or slice that piece sticking out. I'm tried using the cut with surface, but was not able to. I'm right clicking on the angle I want to trim the ends of and clicking on edit part, then going to cut with surface, but when I try to click on the plane I need it won't let me. I also tried using cut extrude, but it asks me to choose a plane to sketch. I don't need to sketch. Can I use cut extrude without sketching and just use the plane to extrude? thanks.
You need to measure the angle by which you need to make cut. Open the part itself and insert a plane at that angle. Make a sketch and use cut extrude. You do need a sketch. Good luck!
Just keep in mind by doing this the parts will be tied together through the in-context feature and all updates will be propagated through the assembly.
You may also try to look into the weldment environment and see if this makes this type of work easier for you. There is a simple tutorial you can run under HELP>SOLIDWORKS TUTORIALS>WELDMENTS that will gove over the basics of the set of tools.
