Later this week I'm making a presentation at CU as a guest lecturer. The students are in their 5th week of a summer class on SolidWorks.

I'm to introduce them to the "applied" use of SolidWorks' sheet metal functionality.

As a theme, we are going to model "A" frame members of a suspension system. We'll model the part twice - once using legacy sheet metal tools and then again using convert-to-sheetmetal.

Attached is the hands-on session handout. I'm going to lecture for 30-45 minutes and then we adjourn to the lab for 60-75 minutes.

You asked, here are my thoughts - use them as you see fit. :-)

I like the idea - it demonstrates that there is more than one way to accomplish something. I also like that this part shows the sketch defined in the assy, and then creating the vertical flange as the base flange rather than the flat top as the base. The advantage of this is that you can easily control the mounting faces as parallel to each other rather than having to later define them as bends with some determined angle.

Then showing the other method lets them decide which method better suits this application. Good presentation.

So, on with the comments if you can stomach them. Remember that I am a stickler for accuracy and thus my comments as you see.

1. The first slide - you should spell SolidWorks properly.
2. Decide if you are going to put periods at the ends of your slide statements or not and
stick with it throughout. Inconsistency looks bad.
3. Slide 2 - I would not hyphenate the convert-to-sheet metal as that's not how it appears
in SW. I would make it match what they see on their screen. Same with base flange - make
it match.
4. Slide 2 - Do you really "model" the skeleton sketch? "Start by modeling the
skeleton..." doesn't really sound right to me. Maybe "creating" instead? Especially since
you then say "Then start the modeling..."
5. Slide 4 - You say to save the part as "A_Frame2.sldprt" yet in your dialog box you show
you are saving as "A-FRAME2.SLDPRT". Which is correct? Most future slides reference it as
the underscore version.
6. Slide 5 - "...edge-flange..." I believe this should be written as they see it on their
screen in SW.
7. Slide 6 - "Insert>sheetmetal>Base flange" should be "Insert>Sheet Metal>Base Flange".
8. Slide 7 - The title "Base Flange..." isn't bad but since the actual title you show in
your screen shot is "Base-Flange1" you may want to consider matching it.
9. Slide 7 - You point out that the "...sketch is to the right...". I would probably point
out that the material is extruded to the left of the sketch as that's what moves as you
reverse the direction, not the sketch - it stays where it is.
10. Slide 8 - Insert>Sheet Metal>Edge Flange
11. Slide 9 - "Edge Flange Property Manager" should be "Edge-Flange PropertyManager" to
match SW.
12. Slide 10 - "After clicking on the Edit Edge Flange Profile button..." should be "...Edit
Flange Profile button..."
13. Slide 11 - "Cut Extrude tool" My SW calls the tool "Extruded Cut".
14. Slide 11 - "Extruded Cut PropertyManager"
15. Slide 12 - On this slide you say to "Click OK...". This could be confusing to a newbie
as there is no button labeled OK. (And again in other slides.)
16. Slide 13 - "Insert>Sheet Metal>Break Corner"
17. Slide 14 - "...image at the lower left..." Looks like the image is lower right.
18. Slide 15 - "...Sheet metal tool bar..." Should be "...Sheet Metal CommandManager..."
Or if you want to use toolbar, notice that it's one word, not two.
19. Slide 16 - The title shows the A- version of the name.
20. Slide 17 - "Open A-..." What's the name going to be?
21. Slide 18 - The title shows the A- version of the name.
22. Slide 18 - The second bullet needs to be "Then...".
23. Slide 18 - Bullet 5 - "...vertical lines at...".
24. Slide 18 - "...PropertyManager...".
25. Slide 19 - Your verbiage for "Direction1" should be "Direction 1". Also 2.
26. Slide 19 - Your stated values don't match the values shown in the screen shot - they are
backwards.
27. Slide 21 – “Click on the Convert to Sheet metal icon…” should be “…Sheet Metal…”
28. Slide 21 – "Insert>Sheet Metal..."
29. Slide 22 - The title should probably be "...Sheet Metal".
30. Slide 22 - "Solidwork's" should be "SolidWorks'".
31. Slide 23 - The title should probably be "Sheet Metal...".
32. Slide 24 - The title should probably be "Sheet Metal...".
33. Slide 25 - The title should probably be "Sheet Metal...".
34. Slide 26 - The title should probably be "Sheet Metal...".
35. Slide 26 - "...PropertyManager...".
36. Slide 27 - The title should probably be "Sheet Metal...".
37. Slide 28 - The title should probably be "Sheet Metal...".
38 Slide 28 - "...Show Preview Option..." should be "...Show preview option..."
