Assembly file size

I have an assembly that is relatively small (I have many other assemblies with more parts and mates), but for some reason the file size continues to rise. The file size is up to 100 mb and saving takes forever. I have this assembly inserted into another assembly and that assembly file size is only 17 mb. I am running SW 2010 SP 2.1 x64. I have attached the assembly stats from assembly expert. I have no idea what is causing the file size to balloon up so much. Any help would be much appreciated.

Correct Answer

For the file size you can also try doing a file save-as to a different name and that may shrink it. But as soon as you do another save you may be back in the same boat. I don't think shrinking the size is going to help you with you performance issue though.

Anything over 100 top level mates is going to start creating issues in an assembly. The less mates the better the performance in most cases. The more mates the more chance you have for mate fighting each other or creating circular references. For a test suppress all the mates and see how if the performance is any better. More sub-assemblies would most likely improve your performance.

I have no idea, but you can use this macro to see if you can shrink the file size though.

This macro comes with a disclaimer. It will resave all files.

I understand this question isanswered,but here is anobservationonmy part.

When inserting multiple instances of a part into anassembly, sometimes this seems to increase the assembly file size much more than one would expect.

You can try and run the ecosqueeze or unfrag utility on the files to see if this shrinks them down. Windows used to do a ghosting in the files that caused them to jump in size but "supposedly" windows doesn't do this anymore....."supposedly"

These are "use at your own risk" shareware utilities and SW does not support them or encourage them; so be sure and make a back up your files prior to running these.

I have used them and have not experienced any problems with them.

Doing a file save-as did work but only when I saved it under a different name. I had tried a save-as without changing the name and that did nothing but when I changed the name it knocked it down to about 30mb. It is now getting larger again with every save that I do but at least I know that I can fix it if I have to! Thanks for all of the help guys!
