SW 2009 Disk Thrashing

SW 2009 X64, SP5.1, Dell Precision M4300 4GB RAM, Windows XP 64.  After about 6 hours of SolidWorks use I experience extreme disk thrashing.  This is usually initiated when I point/click on "File" at the upper left.  The "File" button acknowledges the selection but the drop down dialog does not appear and the disk activity immediately begins.  All system processing appears to be suspended, even the clock (time of day) ceases while the disk churns.  CTRL ALT DEL will not yield task manager.  If I have the task manager open when this starts it appears to be frozen.  After about 20 minutes the system slowly starts to recover.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled SW.  Paging file is set to 10GB initial and max, adjusting these settings does not seem to matter.  Windows indexing/search on or off does not seem to matter.  Help is appreciated.
