Copying curvature to new model

Ok, I'm trying to model an accessory for an iPad, and can't figure out how to get the curvature on the back to copy into a model of my part so I can remove that material and make the part fit to the back.  Is there any way to take a section view of an iPad model, and copy the surface curvature to match into my new part?

I hope that makes sense.  Basically, I'm trying to design an accessory that matches up to about a quarter of the back of the iPad, and kind of clips on.  I'm simply having trouble matching the curvature of the iPad to remove the material on my accessory.  I've got a model of an iPad from Chris Peters that I think is close enough for what I need.

I've tried making a spline along a section view of that model at the distance from the side that I need, and copying that spline into my part, but I can't get it to orient properly.

Can anyone give me some insight on this mess I've gotten myself into in my new job?
