Is there a way to import point cloud data in a .txt file into solidworks for a 3d image of the data? The format of the data is the # of the point, x,y,z and I would like to be able to view a 3d model constructed by this data.
Insert => Curve => Curve Through XYZ Points
This will give you the option to browse for and import a .txt point cloud file.
I probably posted a little soon, this option will let you import a point cloud as a .txt file and construct curves through those points. This will not construct a 3D model from a point cloud. To accomplish that you need to either use Scan to 3D or a third party software such as Geomagic or Rapidform.
The .stl file format is just 3D coordinates. If you have a very large number of coordinates, you can format it to meet this standard, and then use that to import the points.
I have also attached a macro which I use to import 3D points. It is good for anywhere between 1 and 100 points. Maybe more if you really need it.
Could you post an example of the format required to run your macro? This is my first endeavor into this type of work and it's been a little rocky so far. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
