I'm new here and thought I'd take a minute to introduce myself... I am a seasoned engineer working in the automotive industry. We are a manufacturing facility producing Sunroofs, interior trim, window motors and regulators. I support operations on all product lines covering process development and improvement, project management and design and build of new tooling and equipment.
After a couple of years trying to convince our company to provide us Solidworks, it's finally happened. Our standard low-end 3D CAD suite has been SolidEDGE, which is great software and has some minor things it does better than SW (SW has it's advantages over SE as well). The reason for the push to SW was that almost all of our tooling and equipment suppliers use SW and sometimes translations are a big problem. Also a lot of component parts have downloadable CAD but few available in native SE, almost all are available as native SW files.
I've used many CAD suites over the years from AutoCAD to UG and Catia. Our Companies high-end standard is Catia, but it's only available to product designers due to cost. While I've actually only had my hands on a demo of SW (over 10 years ago), I'm getting up to speed quickly, and have my first machine design nearly complete.
I also personally use many graphics packages, Maya being my favorite. If a commercial CAD or graphics tool doesn't meet my needs, I am a software developer and have made many custom 3D applications from scratch.
I'm really looking forward to getting involved in the on-line community and making some new friends.
