What is the procedure to go from a trial version license key to an active key?
I just got my active key, went to the customer portal and signed up -
but I'm still on my trial license... also - tried the transfer and the activate license options...
to no avail as it brings up the trial in the box to choose which to activate?
Do I need to uninstall/reinstall just to change the license number?

You can change the serial number in the registry but if you are not sure how to do it, better don't. You can reinstall the software with a new key and then get it activated. If you plan to reinstall do check this: How to ensure a clean uninstall and update of SolidWorks

follow these steps to switch to a different license.
windows xp
control panel > add/remove programs > solidworks xxxx > rmb and select change > modify the individual installation
windows vista/7
control panel > programs and features > solidworks xxxx > rmb and select change > modify the individual installation
from there the one of the first screens that will appear in the solidworks installation manager is the one with your license key. simply delete the numbers/letters (your current key) that are in there and fill in the boxes with your new license key.
i usually restart my computer at this time (don't know if it is necessary or not, and when you launch solidworks you will then have to activate your new license via email or online.
