How can I simplify an assembly?

I have a very large assembly that is killing my computer. I would like to make a simple part file out of this that is usable. In Inventor I used a command called shrinkwrap to turn an assembly into a part file. It also removed internal features and patched holes reducing the file size. I know in solidworks I can save an assy as a part file but is there a tool that works similar to what Inventor has?

In the save dialog when you save the assembly as a part there are a couple of checkboxes at the bottom of the window. Select "Save External Faces."

  It all depends on whether you want the simplified assembly to be associated to the detailed assembly or not. I didn't look at Charles' thread very closely, but there are a couple other ways to simplify your assembly and stay associated to the original. First is to create a new part in your detailed assembly, and use the join command. Second method is to suppress all internal components, small components that don't interface with to external assemblies / components. It all depends on what you want to achieve.

Have you tried SpeedPak? It doesn't create a separate part file, but it creates a simplified configuration within the assembly file.
