Is there a way to break a part into various smaller parts?

I just imported a part assembly from autocad to solidworks using a dxf file. For some reason the model is coming out as one big single part, as opposed to an assembly of different parts. The model is pretty complicated, so reassembling it would be very time consuming. Is there a way to make individual sections of this big part as parts themselves. As in, transforming our big part into various smaller parts for later assembly?

If indeed you have imported a large single part (3D-DXF ?) you should be able to use the Insert > Features > Split function to separate it into multi-bodies, and then use the Save Bodies option to create separate parts.

These are all still sketches, and not 3D geometry, correct?

  If it is 3D geometry, look to see if you have multiple bodies. This will appear within a folder in your feature tree. If you have multiple bodies, you can "save bodies". Which will save out each body as a separate part file.

Are you sure you didn't import an IGES or STEP file? I can't get SW to import anything but curves from .dxf.

If you did import IGES or STEP, you can select "Import multiple bodies as parts" in the Options before you do the import.

Hey guys, I have been playing with this for a few days and I'm still have difficulty. I've tried all of your suggestions and at the moment can't get any of them work. Apparently what I've read is that when I did my so called 3-D image in autocad it's not really 3-D. When I save out of Autocad I can save it as a .dxf or .dwg but then when I import this straight into solidworks it shows it as one whole part, instead of the 100 or so parts I drew on autocad. It shows each section it imported but it doesn't make each of these imported items as single parts. Thanks again guys for all your help.

  What is it you made in AutoCAD? You say "the 100 or so parts I drew in autocad". Do you really mean "drew"? Are they 2D drawings of parts? If that is so, then none of our advice will be of much use. You may be able to make each of your "parts" into a Block in the SW drawing. I think you can use those blocks to make SW 3D parts, but it is, of course, just the first sketch.

I finally found out how to use the insert-features-split. It saved all of the parts, now I just have to assemble them all but I guess that's better having to redraw all of it.
