excel based bom on 64 bit machines

We currently use an excel based BOM for on our drawings. Before we installed SW 2010 last week, we had no trouble. Since, our 64 bit machines are not able to insert an excel based BOM. When we go to Insert->Tools->Excel Based Bill of Materials, excell opens showing our template and then an error pops up saying "Error Creating Bill of Materials". I get the same error on all of our 64 bit machines. The 32 bit machines are working great just like the did with SW 2009. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Thanks,

I've had some issues that I believe are related to what you're seeing. Do you have Excel v2003 or newer installed already? Have you tried out the patch for Microsoft C++ yet? I wrote about what I've seen here (links to fixes listed in post):

  Your first comment about what version of excel we are running got me thinking. We are running Office 2010. So, I opened and resaved our excel based bom as .xlsx (Office 2007 version) and everything worked great.

Hi Luke,

Are your x64 machines Windows 7 ?

If yes, this might help: there was a change that Microsoft made in Win7 x64 related to registry reflection that broke support of XLS (97-2003) file support in SolidWorks 2010. This is fixed in SolidWorks 2010 SP03.
