If I change the name of a part whick already has a drawing attached, how can I preserve the link between the drawing file and the model? Changing the name of the drawing to match the model will not preserve the links.
Any help appreciated.
OR else create a copy of the files, rename and fix the reference of the renamed drawing so that it points to the new renamed part.
How can I do that? i.e. fix the reference
Do a CTRL+O (= file open)
select the file you want the references changed
but don't double click it, instead look at the lower right corner and press the button "references"
in the new window you can now double click on the part you want to reference to a different file
Wow, you're making a mountain out of a mole hill.
Just use SolidWorks Explorer to Rename SolidWorks files and maintain references.
yeah, you should be able to just RMB on the file in Windows Explorer and select SolidWorks -> Rename and it will find the references. I think by default it only does the same folder so if you have the files stored all over the server rather than just in the same folder you most likely will need to do some adjusting in your search folders settings.
Both the RMB and sw explorer use the same bit of code to do their magic. in the options of explorer you can set the locataions it will search for the references (in addition to the folder the file is in).
If you want to rename from Solidworks, start by opening both the part and the solid drawing.
First rename the drawing to the new file name. Then change to the part and rename to the new
filename. You should see a message about the part being used......
If this part is used in an assembly, you will want to open that as well before renameing.
Jim peltier Explains it step by step with pictures. I found it easiest to follow. Hope this helps!
