I am finding that the SP2.1 version of 2010 will unexpectedly "freeze" and report as non-responding in Task Manager and never seem to recover; causing the user to close the application and re-start SW. This occurs often in the sketcher and in assembly modeling, at least once a day. I am using the 64 bit version with Windows XP64. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Go and get WinDBG (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc266321.aspx) and get the dump file to your VAR so that it can be analysed/forwarded to SolidWorks for consideration.
An application merely "freezing" gives support technicians nothing to go by since it's probably not very reproducible.
If you have found a reproducible method of recreating a freeze/crash (ie click here, press this, bang, freeze) please post it up so it can be verified.
Absolutely happening to me all the time - switched to EPDM and SW2010 at the same time, and I am being pilloried for using EPDM.
It is being held responsible for all the problems, but I think they are SW2010 related
I can't get any work done on large assemblies, system hangs and does not recover.
I am using SW2010 SP2.1 on XP64 inside SEPDM vault and not having problems with locking up like I think you are describing. Not sure what is different, but I'm not seeing it.

I have this problem all the time as well, although many times it will recover (switching the Solidworks.exe process in the Task Manager to High priority seems provide a very minimal benefit). I am working on quite a large assembly right now and a simple mate can take up to 3 or 4 minutes to complete. I am using Win 7 x64, Quadro FX3800, Xeon W3520 Quad Core (2.67 GHz), and 12 gigs of RAM in my system. Everytime the program freezes up (which can be caused by a mouse click on pretty much anything some days) I get what I call the 'white screen of death'. Has anyone managed to come up with any fixes for this?
I have SW 2010 SP4 and it freezes up regularly.
Graphic stops updating, and a minute later recovers. ( Most of the time).
Some times the graphics driver crashes and is reset ( according to windows)
Lately I've been getting a tiny strip under hte mouse that still updates, ( and it generally freezes on zoom-pan)
I wait it out.
Sometimes solidworks just dies "program not responding".
I ripped out my second Nvidia FX570 and the graphics driver hasn't crashed since.
But solidworks still doeswhite out or freeze updating the screen.
I was using 2010 SP2.1 and it would freeze, crash, do funky things and that was on a
64 bit XP machine. It got a lot better when we upgraded to SP3.1
Now it only locks up on rare occasions.
There was a time when the Nvidia graphics driver would lock up in SolidWorks. Has been an issue with older vintage cards. Not just with SolidWorks either, it is an issue with Nvidia drivers across different software packages. The FX3450/3400 vintage cards seem to be very prone to this. Seems to be less of an issue with the newer generations of video cards from Nvidia.
One thing for those of you with Windows 7 and Vista systems be sure that you have Windows Aero Enabled. Some of the symptoms you describe could be the result of Windows Aero being disabled.
Cheers,
Anna
Ok, so I now have to ask as I now have Win 7. What exactly does it mean to have Windows Aero Enabled? I have turned off some "things" that I didn't like and I wonder if I have turned off more than is recommended. I have attached a view of my visual settings - anything jump out at you that should be turned on? Should I also look
elsewhere?
I have a new Win 7 machine with an ATI FirePro V4800 card with 8.723.0.0 driver and I am seeing what I would call visual problems.

Yeah Wayne, I am curious about this as well because I am using Windows 7 at home and too
like you wonder what is turned off that I don't want to be.
Well, I had the same problem with 2010 Sp4.0 and I decided to dump it and go back to SW2008.
I have a very powerfull machine and still 2010 was freezing up on me.
HP-Workstation, intel 3.2 GHz, intel Core i7 with quad cores, 16GB memory 1067 MHz DDR3, video ATI Radeon HD 4850 with 512MB
27" monitor with 2560 x 1440
Now since I've got back to 2008 I have no problems whatsoever. I'm doing private consulting design work for medical devices/instruments and I cannot afford to waste time with 2010 freezing on me.
Even though I have said that 2010 is the most unstable version I have experienced, I have been
told that every version has it's users that say that. I think that is true, but this is my experience.
Now I ahve also been told with all of the issues I was having like you guys are describing, I was
having them in Windows XP and told by my VAR if we were running Windows 7 we wouldn't be having these
issues. Well you guys are shooting a hole in that theory!!!
One of the issues for you with 2010 might be your ideo ATI Radeon HD 4850, doesn't seem to be supported, and even though I have had som egood results with the Radeon cards, I also have had issues directly related to some Radeon cards...
Just my 2cents, still should work...but....
Brian
Octavian,
Why would you go with such a tricked out machine and then pick an unsupported video card?
Your experience with 2008 versus 2010 fits with the observed tendency for every new generation of SW to require more from the hardware.

I'm afraid I've just put up another thread on exactly the same subject. Oh well we'll have the two threads together at the top of the message board.
You kind of wonder what all the Beta testing is for. It would be nice if SW took the attitude that they just didn't release a new version of SW until it had been tested and found to be bug free. Might concentrate a few minds. Who cares about saving 0.2 seconds with a mouse gesture if you have to spend 20 minutes rebooting your machine every day and another hour rebuilding your models because autorecover didn't work.
