Photorealistic Rendering of an assembly line

I need to create photorealistic renderings of assembly lines comprised of several large machines of over 1000 parts ea.  I have been reading about "speedpak" and think that might have some application to this, but cannot find any tutorials or techniques for employing it.  Short of "gutting" or suppressing all the internals of each assy, are there ways one can create simplified representations of large assys for this purpose?!?

It seems to me, one way might be to create simplified configurations of every sub-assy, possibly using the speedpak functionality, and building up toward the top TLA that draws on the speekpak of each child assy, and so on down the line.  It seems like it would be time consuming, however.

Does someone have experience with this type scenario?!?

Thanks in Advance!!!
