I am using SW2010 SP2.1.
I am doing some exploring in the Toolbox Configuration utility. I came across a limitation that I wasn't expecting. Is this the approach others are using?
I created two custom properties, both of which require a unique configuration. One is material and the other is finish. I can now have toolbox create configurations for my Stainless screws, my Plain Steel Screws, and my Brass screws. I can also capture whether the screw has a plain finish, black oxide, or zinc.
But I can't disable select configuration combinations. I am not going to need a zinc-plated Stainless screw, or a Black Oxide Brass Screw. Is there a way to disable individual configuration within the same standard? I was hoping to not create a bunch of standards copies for each material or finish.
Thanks, Daen
Hi Daen,
Unfortunately, this is a current limitation. You cannot build a dependency between custom properties in Toolbox. It would make for a very nice enhancement, though. I would encourage you to submit one via the customer portal.
In the meantime, you could consider combining the two together into a single custom property "Material/Finish", then create the relevant combinations (e.g. Stainless-Plain, Plain Steel-Black Oxide, etc.). If you only need these properties to give you a list of unique configurations for the purposes of Part Number and Description, then this approach should work fine for you and in fact it simplifies things for your users since they only have to click one list box in the PropertyManager instead of two. If however, you need both of these properties to stand on their own because you need to show for example "Material" as its own column in the BOM and "Finish" as a separate column in the BOM, then this approach will not work.
I hope this helps a bit. Again, I'd encourage you to submit an enhancement request for the "dependent custom property" behavior.
Cheers,
