We just upgraded my at work system from Windows XP to Windows 7 (64 bit), and now its time to set the system up for best performance in SW.
My question to all the Windows 7 experts is what should I do to the settings to get the best SW performance?
System is a Dell Precision 690
has:
2 Intel Xeon 5160 CPU's at 3 Ghz
4 Gb ram
Nvidia Quatro FX 3450/4000 SDI
Windows 7 (64 bit)
Future plan is to have 8 Gb RAM and a better video card (Nvidia Quattro FX 1800 is being looked at).
Basically I want to know what to turn on / off in windows and SW right now, we are going to update the hardware as shown above later.
Thanks,
Hi Chris-
just went to win7 x64 3-4weeks ago- so from what I have picked up from others-,
1- keep "aero" turned on in your personalise / display options- apparently this can have an impact on solidworks annotations (in drawings etc), and also how sw tiles windows, or updates text etc
2- you now have access to a file explorer pane within the open dialogue box - excellent once you get your head around it- I use the "expand to current file" (? or similar) setting which to my mind is closest to the windows explorer found in XP
3- The adress bar (at the top of the sw "open" box) doubles as a shortcut menu to let you jump several layers "back up the file tree" - or use the drop down menus at each level of the file tree (in the adress bar)- but there is no more "up 1 level" button-
4- in the "file open" / "computer" dialogue boxes, turn off the preview pane, and just expand the bottom file properties box, which also has a built in preview window.....gives you more room to see the explorer tree in the lh pane, and still see full file names etc in the rh pane, and seems to run faster to me.......
5- I have a bad display lag (when I use tile windows) with my new fx1800- so maybe look at an fx1700-? there must be a tweak somehere, -?
6- Dare i say it, a lot of folks recomend the fx570 or fx 580, about a fifth of the price and just as good unless you are doing very large assemblies......
7- just do a win7 search on this forum......
