How do I make a top down assembly template?

Hi all,

I am just wondering what is the best way to created a top down assembly so that I can have it set-up so I can change certain parameters and save it as a seperate file so that I can then make different changes to the template to create a totally new file without affecting the previously made file?

for example:

Template door frame----> Job number 001

-----> Job Number 002

Its just to save time as only certain dimensions change and it doesnt make sense creating a new door frame from the ground up, but so far with the top down assemblies I have made I make changes and save it as a seperate file, yet whenever I make a change to the original assembly all the other assemblies are still affected because all the components are still linked.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Correct Answer

I take it you have an assembly containing a number of parts that you need to use as a kind of template for other models. For this to work you need to create a new assembly and new parts that are referenced by the new assembly. If you just create a new assembly it will still reference the old parts. When you change the old part the new assembly will change as you have found.

To create new parts I find the easiest way is to use pack and go. The new parts are created simply by changing the part names in the file reference list.

you have a couple of options.

in your "template" make all the parts that will change virtual components - they only exist in the assembly they are in and therefore would not be liked to the other assemblies.
- this can be tricky with external references
- works really good if you don't need drawings of the changing components
  - though you can make them new real parts after you make the changes
"pack and go" the assembly to start you new job number
- just remember to uncheck the parts you don't want new files for
remember to "save as" for each part that changes

Thanks for the fast reply. I'm not to familiar with the virtual components so will go and have a look, but I do need drawings of all the components.

I have pretty much no idea what you mean by the term "pack and go"???, do u mean everytime i change a component I just "save as". does the original component need to be virtual??

I just read up on the pack and go feature and tried it and it works a treat.

Is there anyway you can get it to automatically update the file names. for example if the assembly has 25 parts and u want to add " - 0001" at the end off all of them can this be done in one step or do i have to do each one individually??

P&G should give you the opportunity to add characters to each file. Look at the bottom of the dialog for "Add prefix" & "Add suffix".
