I'm using Solid Edge for a project asked by one my customer and I found the SolidEdge Revision Manager a lot more powerful then SolidWorks Pack and Go.
I attach an image to show the command.
The SolidEdge Revision Manager is not a part of SE PDM.
It's an old command present from the more basic Solid Edge license.
You can do everything...
Do you think that can be interesting for SolidWorks users ?
Can I insert an ER ?

Please use my image and insert an Enhanced Request (ER), because if we talk only here, we don't obtain nothing.

SolidEdge Revision Manager has these features:
1) You can open the assembly and copy a number of linked file to another location, rename anhoter part of the linked file to new folder/file name, substitute other parts, and this can be made in just one only step, even if the assembly is made by hundreds of parts
2) You can redefine all links of the parts from a structure of folder to anhoter structure of folder (useful when you transfer projects from your server to anhoter company server)
3) You can repair broken links in one single step, giving to the system the old broken path and the new correct one
4) You can open an assembly, retrieve all linked drawing (including drawings linked to parts contained in the assembly), change name and location of all the parts and the system will update drawing reference automatically.
5) You can access to file properties of all the file contained in the assembly in a massive way, without the need to open the assembly in editor and browse the parts one by one
6) You can generate BOM without the need to open the assembly in editor
Some of the above functionaltu are already present in SWX Explorer, but I find that it is not so powerfull as Revision Manager. Having Revision Manager (contained in the very basic license of SE) help you to save the cost of a pdm system in many cases.
Revision Manager is intended to be a client for Insight Connect (the built-in pdm of SE) as well as SWX explorer is the client for PDMworks (I'm not sure about this): both program can run standalone, but it seems to me that RM standalone is less limited than swx-explorer stand-alone.
The topic is started to show that basic function present in other software are more complete.
PDMWorks and PDMWorks Enterprise don't have the same, intuitive and simple capabilities of SolidEdge Revision Manager.
Pack & Go is a part of SolidWorks Explorer and as you had stated, it can be compared to SolidWorks Explorer.
But this is not the point of view.
The point of view is that I would like to show to SolidWorks users, that sometime, the sexy user interface or less mouse click are less important of a basic function that works well and good implemented.
Are years that SolidWorks Explorer is not implemented and I think it's an half product.

Yea, pack & go could become a lot more usefull for revision managing. However, I agree that the push for PDM use will unfortunately hinder a lot of built-in functionality that should be part of the 'standard' packages. Oh well...

I'm a long-term user of SE and I find that Revision Manager is an invaluable tool. Sometimes (little companies, free lance users) it makes you save the cost of a PDM system.
