I am new to photoworks and am looking to create a high res/quality image which uses material finishes and colours.
If you know any little tricks to get the perfect image, I would be very grateful for them. I have been through the discussions in this group so please dont suggest, as a tip, 'to do some research'!

The question you ask is a very loaded one without an 'easy' answer. It totally depends on what you are trying to do. Different images call for different techniques so it's hard to say X or Y.
But in general, you really can't go wrong by taking Deepak's suggestions and spending some time on robrodriguez.com - He is an outstanding resource on Photoworks/rendering in general. He has very graciously put tons of info on his site to help with this very thing.
One question I have for you is are you only considering photoworks? As you may know it is on it's way out and the alternative solution of Photoview can provide you with great images in a much easier, more user friendly fashion.
It might make it easier to help if you have a specific image you are working on. There are some very qualified people on this forum will be glad to help with a more specific question.

I am only considering photoworks because thats all we have! We dont have photoview for some reason. I have used 3ds max before which is great and I want similar quality. Is this not acheivable through photoworks?
The product is a much like a bike frame with some added none metal parts. I would send an image but the nature of the product is confidential... dont want to sacked in a recession!! The images are needed for a brochure so i'm looking for very good quality, if photoworks doesn't have the power to do this then I may have to find an altermative.

Photoworks definitely has the quality - it just takes some learning. Take a look at some of the gallery images or past rendering contest winners on Rob's site.
What kind of issues are you having with your current render? Too dark, materials not realistic? Can you post an image of a non-confidential part with the materials/lighting you are dealing with? Don't want to see you 'sacked' either - I love that "sacked" comment - are u in the UK?

Here is an image created with PV360. It's similar I think to what your bike image may be. Bent tubing, painted, metal, plastic components.

Thanks Rob, thats the ticket! Was that done in photoworks or 360? Thats very simiar model and is of the quality i am looking for.
The problem i am having is that everything looks grainy and really distorted colours. Are there any good photoworks tutorials around?

pv360 is the way to go.
have you seen the thread of pictures of solidworks projects? there is a lot of pv360 images in there.

do you mean how do you get pv360?
if so what version of solidworks are you running?
you should get it on install. if you download solidworks off the web or use your dvd, you will have the option to just install pv360.
you could check with your var as to why you dont have it.
