Weldments and fittings

How do you model weldments with fittings? I get involved with modelling small mineral processing plants and we have a lot of steelwork structures for supporting equipment and for access platforms. These structures are connected with bolted connections. Sometimes they are welded together. I'm interested to hear how and why different people model similar weldments. Do you use parts or assemblies for the fittings and weldments?

Thanks for that mate. Will do that some time. I'm also interested to hear how others tackle this also. You know - as a single weldment part, subassembly with parts added and so one. Not many responses. Either people are being coy or maybe they don't do a lot of largish steelwork models. I kind of like the assembly approach because mateial properties can be added to a part and also because it is easy to copy multiple parts that are the same to the various locations. I suppose you can do that with a sketch driven feature pattern in a part or using blocks. Anyway, just thought I'd throw it our their and see what people are up to.

I use weldments alot but we do not get into structural much. What has worked for us is to make the rule that if it is welded then it is one part but if it is bolted then they are separate parts. THis is how we detail, and model them. That being said we are waiting till the bugs are out of 2009 BOM's/Cutlists and then we will model things like weldnuts, sheetmetal etc. in an assembly but do one drawing showing it as a part with a cutlist.

Lorne have you listed the bugs elsewehere that you are waiting to be dealt with?
I'd be interested in reading them.
I've been playing around with the new bom/cutlist and Ican get some good results. All though I find the setting up awkward and not very informative.

I haven't been able to play with 2009 much. Mostly I am watching the forums to see when the chatter dies.
So is sp3 stable?
If so I may have some ammo to go to my boss and say I need to start testing it seriously.

The Big Problem with the Detailed Cutlist BOM is that if you have to two or more Structural Members of the same length it groups them together even when they have different hole patterns or cut features (which makes them different) unlike a regular CutList, which works properly.

This issue has different SPR #s (look at the Knowledge Base) and is suppost to be fixed for SW10 Beta! I think that's ludicrous because it was suppost to be new functionality for SW09 not SW10, oh well.

I've mentioned this on a couple of weldments threads already.

I see your point.
In some cases I actually need this information - X-qty at Y-length, regardless of other machining/metalworking. Sometimes I need to beak it down as you have suggested.

I think I'll start another thread.
