Trim or Cut weldment?

Hi,

I am attempting to use the weldment tools to generate a part. None of the features I am creating are actually weldments, I just want to use the weldment functionalities of SolidWorks.

I have generated a sketch and added structural members to the sketch and now need to trim away some areas. The attached image below shows the area I need to remove. It is a small section between two rails. I can not trim this area out of the sketch as I need the sketch for future toolpaths to machine a part derived from this sketch.

I can trim the area well enough with a Cut/Extrude, but am wondering if there is a way to trim this area using the weldment trim tools. So far I have had no luck getting the results I need as the trim tool removes the entire length of the rail whereas I only need the section between the two rails removed.

Also, when using the Cut/Extrude it leaves remnants of the rail ends which show up in the drawing. Is there a way to merge all the parts into what looks like a single entity?

I can post the actual part as well, as soon as I figure out how to do it...

Thanks in advance,

Tim
