SolidWorks Drawings ER Blitz - Status at SW2010
I installed SW2010 at home not too long ago, and one of first things I did was check what was new with drawings. All in all I much prefer modeling over drawing, but since all the Blitz stuff last year I was curious to see what progress had been made. I ended up going through our list item by item, and have a report on the staus of the Blitz for SW2010 - see below.
The first thing I checked was tables. At first I was really bummed, because I thought the vertical padding was still completely broken. It wasn't until like a day later that I realized it was fixed, and it fact worked pretty good. I was fooled by my habit of double clicking to edit a cell, and the padding controls don't appear unless you single click. It wasn't until I was seeing what was up with hole tables that I stumbled across it.
So yeah, that's great. Now if they'd just fix the centermark groups.
If you see anythign I missed, please post so I can make corrections.
Thanks
Dwight
IMPLEMENTED BY SW2010
Implemented: 18
Not implemented: 43
(Item 18.1 Display speed: your mileage may vary.)
1 SYMBOLS
YES - 1.1. Create option to attach the ASME symbol for "all around" to the bend of a leader. [The "all round" symbol is available for both weld symbols and tolerance blocks. These are the only standard uses for this symbol, so I'd say it's done.]
NO - 1.2. Create feature to embed gtol.sym custom symbols in drawing files. [I can't find it.]
NO - 1.3. Provide user control of gtol.sym file location under Tools -> Options -> File Locations. [I can't find it.]
2 TABLE FORMAT - for all table types
NO - 2.1. Maintain vertical cell padding for a row whenever lines in a cell are added or subtracted by word-wrap, such that the cell with the most lines has the default (or specified) vertical cell padding. [Vertical padding can now be set (see 2.2.) and row heights automatically expand when word-wraps are added (as they did before,) but they do not collapse when removed.]
YES - 2.2. Create option in table properties for user-specified vertical cell padding. [Very nice, but I actually missed this my first time into a table, which really had me riled up. Here's the deal: if you LMB once, you can adjust vertical padding (as well as horizontal padding) but LMB twice so that you are editing text and you don't see the padding controls. Another caution: the default tables come in with row heights larger than their very thin vertical padding, which makes them seem out of control. Do save your own templates with the vertical padding set.]
YES - 2.3. Create feature to disable vertical cell padding and specify a constant row height, regardless of lines per cell, to be applied either row-by-row or for entire table. [This does pretty much work. I had to get used to the toggle action when selecting multiple rows or columns.]
NO - 2.4. Create option in table properties for user specified defaults for vertical and horizontal cell padding. [This must be done by making your own table templates.]
NO - 2.5. Create option in column properties for user to lock Column Width such that when a table template is made and this template is used, the column width cannot be changed. [See comment for 2.3]
NO - 2.6. Create option in row properties for user to lock Row Height such that when a table template is made and this template is used, the row height cannot be changed. [See comment for 2.3]
YES - 2.7. Create capability to split a table for continuation to left or right.
YES - 2.8. Create capability to split a table for continuation on another sheet.
3 TABLE FUNCTION - for all table types
NO - 3.1. Change SW tables to have basic spreadsheet functions, without MS Excel. [Still needs Excel.]
YES - 3.2. In SW tables, provide ability to advance the cell focus using the tab key. [Tab key changes focus to next righthand cell.]
4 PROPERTIES
YES - 4.1. Provide a view scale property for annotation links.
NO - 4.2. Provide an "SW-Length" property to apply parametrically a user-selected curve (line, arc, circle, spline, or Compcurve.)
NO - 4.3 Create a SW property that will automatically fill in with the BOM Item# [I still don't think this would fit into the normal "link to property" machinery, so I don't expect to see it. What's needed is described in 12.4]
5 CENTERMARKS
NO - 5.1. Create option to add a new centermark to an existing centermark group. [This would really be useful. It's now my number one request for drawings.]
NO - 5.2. Create option to drag a lone centermark, or a centermark in a centermark group, and attach it to a new hole while retaining witness line attachments.
7 GD&T
NO - 7.1. When a datum symbol is attached to an arc or circle of sufficient radius, conform base of attachment triangle to that arc or circle.
YES - 7.2. Allow a datum symbol to be attached to the long leg of a leader line. [Nicely done.]
NO - 7.6. Provide system option to allow GD&T tolerance dimensions to switch units when system units are changed.
NO - 7.7 Provide option to change font used in datum symbol.
NO - 8.1. Provide option to create a named view when in drawing mode.
NO - 8.2. Create a view rotation option that locks one user-specified axis. [I still really long for this one.]
NO - 8.3. When the configuration of a view's object is changed, provide option to change the configuration in all dependent views.
NO - 8.4. Add ability to change "Sheet Scale" from a Drawing View Property Manager.
YES - 8.5. Provide option in view properties window to add view title and/or view scale to view.
NO - 8.6. Create ability to add broken-out sections on detail views.
NO - 8.7. Create a drawing-view-creation option to create a drawing view of a named section view from the part model. [There's a "save" button in the Section View tool, but all it does is save a view angle, not the section. What good is that?]
NO - 8.8. Add alternate position view function to section views.
NO - 8.9. Add option to use display state (as well as configuration) for alternate position views.
9 HOLE CALLOUTS
YES - 9.1. Provide hole callouts for holes in non-planar surfaces. [At least this works for various hole types into a cylindrical surface (not centered on the cylinder axis, either.)]
NO - 9.2. Create ability to combine multiple identical hole callouts in a single callout with a combined quantity.
YES - 9.3. Create ability to add tolerance to, and to change units of, secondary dimensions in a hole callout such as depth; depth and diameter of a counterbore; diameter, depth, and/or angle of a countersink; etc. [works well.]
10 HOLE TABLES
NO - 10.1. Create option to locate hole tag at the center of the hole. [You can manually, but you cannot do it by default.]
NO - 10.2. Create option to show user-specified text for tag.
NO - 10.3. Create option to show dual dimensions for location and size in hole table.
NO - 10.4. Adjust hole tag numbers to close up number series when holes are removed from table.
11 PRINT
YES - 11.1. Create option to control PDF and export print quality.
12 NOTES
YES - 12.1. Provide consistent line height in notes with embedded flags and symbols. [Flags and symbols do not change line spacing, even when they overlap adjacent lines. Is this a good thing? Add a tolerance frame and spacing does increase to make room for that symbol. That is a good thing, in my opinion.]
NO - 12.3. Create convenient tool to convert lower case to all caps. [Nothing in search.]
NO - 12.4. Create an item number tool to insert a parametric item number into a note by selecting a BOM line, which would stay linked to that item or show the link code if the item is deleted. [Not available yet. You have the option to 1) create a balloon; 2) format the balloon shape to "none"; 3) edit a note elsewhere; 4) while editing select the balloon to insert the item number into the text; and 5) hide the balloon. This is obviously cumbersome.]
NO - 12.5. Create drop down menu in annotation property manager that lists all drawing views, shows the view to which the annotation is associated, and allows the user to select a new view to which the annotation is to be associated.
13 DIMENSION
NO - 13.1 Create option in autodimension to place dimensions outside the nearest edge, rather than all on one side and rather than all at top or bottom.
YES - 13.3 Provide document option to display chamfer dimensions in a single call-out using a one-leader DIM X DIM or DIM X ANGLE format. For example <------------ .25 X 45o.
YES - 13.4 Provide capability to drag radius dimension of a toroid or a toroidal segment to either side of view.
NO - 13.5 Show gap between extension line and feature edge when dimension is dragged to opposite end of edge.
YES - 13.6 Add multijog option for radius, diameter, and hole call-outs.
YES - 13.7 Add ability to drag a model dimension to a detail view.
NO - 13.8 Add ability to modify an model angle dimension such that, in the drawing, the dimension is moved to a new quadrant.
NO - 13.9 Create ability to add a foreshortened dimension to a detail view (ex. overall length dimension).
NO - 13.10. Create ability to reassign a dimension to a different entity by dragging.
14 ITEM BALLOONS
NO - 14.1 Create capacity to divide an item quantity among item balloons in more than one view. [This can be done manually with the new quantity option, as an override. SW doesn't keep track.]
NO - 14.2 Create option in item balloon properties to edit quantity from 0 up to the total number of instances of that item unclaimed in other views. Where the quantity is zero, show item number in parenthesis without quantity or flag. For example: <-------(ITEM 3) [see 14.1]
NO - 14.3 Provide icon for item in assembly drawing to show that all instances are accounted for in item balloon quantities.
? - 14.4 Provide the ability to item balloon sub assemblies that are inserted after the BOM is created using the Top assembly. ie 3.9 from BOM in a separate sub assembly. [I still don't understand this one.]
NO - 14.5 Combine single and stacked balloon into one feature and allow change from single to stacked, stacked to single.
NO - 14.5 Change the Balloon Setting / Style = "None" so that when inserted into a note, the item number aligns correctly with the rest of the note text.
YES - 14.6 Provide feature within item balloon properties to add item quantity ("4X" format) and/or editable text located adjacent (above, below, left, or right) to the item balloon. Apply to both stacked and single item balloons. [Nice addition.]
15 DRAWING EXPORT
NO - 15.1. Provide option to set origin for DXF export.
16 FLAGS
NO - 16.1 Create option to apply a flag to an outline number in outlined notes.
NO - 16.2 Provide capability to drag a copy of a flagged outline number to another location, view, and/or page such that changes to the outline numbering will update the flag number.
17 LINES
NO - 17.1 Add line color, thickness and style drop downs/buttons to the property manager when a line or model edge is selected. [Is this necessary? These controls appearnce in the Context Toolbar when you select a line or edge.]
18 DISPLAY
YMMV - 18.1 Increase display speed.
