Not being an engineer or a maths person (ok, I'm an industrial designer - don't shoot!) I hear people call for "conics" all the time - what are the purposes of conics? Am I correct in understanding that you want elliptical, parabolic and hyperbolic sections that you can control with a rho (eccentricity) value? Is this more than just sketch geometry - fillets, or surfaces of some kind?
There are three ways I know of to make rounds:
- Circular sections
- Conic sections
- Spline sections
While it's true Solidworks can sketch conics, it's not a very intuitive way to go.
Imagine you had to sketch circular sections for making regular fillets!
In fact, a circle is also a conic, in a way!
Conic simply refers to the cross-section created, when a plane slices a cone:
It is explained very well here in the uhm... fellow Dassault product, we're all family right:
The benefits are as he says: less dense geometry than a spline, easy to adjust can't ever wobble like a spline, can get better smooth joins than a circle section can.
The idea is you adjust the value of your conic depending on the geometry surrounding it, there should be a value for almost any geometric situation that gets you very smooth continuity without having to resort to splines -- though technically it is still G1 (tangent continous)
Oiy have you touched on a well trod subject!
Conics in SW are not as straight forward as we would like. Here's another thread that might shed some light on what you are asking for:
I would be curious if anyone has tried this software that includes conics:
Thanks for the info guys. Interesting to see it's as much an ID thing as it is an aerospace thing...

Does anyone know if or when sketched conics (w/ rho value) will be added to SW? This was a topic of debate in the Solidworks 2010 vs Pro/ENGINEER Wildfire 5.0 Shootout (http://www.designengine.com/feature.php?feature=97) that took place in Chicago on 06/30/2010.
Although several of the Pro-E users who attended the event where very impressed with the improvements in SW surfacing capabilities, conics is still an area of concern for some of these Pro-E users. For discussion about the results of the shootout, refer to this link: https://forum.solidworks.com/message/165876
SPR 219494 is still open and the priority is "Medium". I would be curious to know what effort is being made on this as well.
