Inventor Assembly File

I'm trying to open an Inventor Assembly (.iam) file which I thought I was able to open with SolidWorks but it
keeps giving me an error message, "The file you are opening is an Assembly file. Please install Inventor 11 
to open such files."  I'm not sure why it won't let me open it.  Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas
why it is not working?  Please help!  Thank you!

Correct Answer

Download and instal Inventor View ## (## = version of Inventor source files) and attempt to open the assembly again. This should resolve your issue(s).

I downloaded that software and it seemed as if it was going to open the assembly but then it failed. When I tried to open it in SW it opened a box saying "converting inventor assembly" then it simply went back to the front screen of solidworks. When I tried to open it in the Inventor View it gave me the error message "The database in C:\Documents and Settings\ABBY 9\Desktop\LA3700.iam could not be opened." Any other suggestions???

If Inventor View cannot open the file, I would lean towards something being wrong with with he file itself. Did you get this file from another user/company or was it something internal? I would try to obtain the file again to make sure it isn'tcorrupt.

Not having the associated part files coul also be part of this problem.

Ok, thanks for the help. It is not an internal document. I am getting in touch with the company that made it now and seeing if they can send it in another format or can resend it. Thanks for helping me learn how to open the IAM files in the future!

I just remembered and figured I should add that I do not have the part files for the Inventor Assembly. I only have the assembly file, do you think that could be the problem??
