Migration from 32 bit to 64 bit

Hi all,

we have 50 32 bit users and one dedicated server for SW licensing & one dedicated server for EPDM vault both with 32 bit installation....

now we have to change some of our user machines from 32 bit to 64 bit so we have some doubts.....

1. compatibility / interchangibility of SW models between 32 bit & 64 bit machines { to & fro}.

2. compatibility / interchangibility of SW macro / VBA macros between 32 bit & 64 bit machines.

3. As we have blend of 32 bit & 64 bit user so what kind of upgradation for EPDM vault server is required ?

4. As we have blend of 32 bit & 64 bit user so what kind of upgradation for SW licensing server is required ?

I haven't seen any issues between exchanging files (to & fro) between 32 & 64 bit. Not exactly sure with macros but I have used once a 32 bit macro on 64 bit and it worked well.

We are running network license server in a 32 bit XP.

Workgroup PDM in 64 bit Win server 2003.

Workstations both 64 bit Vista and 32 bit XP/Vista.

No problems.

(8 licenses, all in a local office)

have windows 7 64bit on laptop with 8 gb of memory, have windows 7 32bit @ office. only problem that i have had was when i had my image quality cranked up on the laptop. . had no problems running it on my laptop but it wouldn't even open on my machine in the office. ran out of memory.

note....been using windows 7 64 bit for 6 weeks now. it is the best OS i have used from MS. stable, fast, solidworks 2009 4.1 runs great.....

  I am getting ready to purchase a new computer that will run SW 2009 4.1. I'd like to configure it with Windows 7 x64 but IT wants me to use Vista x64. Would you recommend I go for Windows 7? Also what graphics card and driver are you using?

    I will suggest to use windows 7 x64 as it is more stable and better as compared with Vista.

    I'll also suggest going to Win 7 vs. Vista 64. I've had nothing but GRIEF with Vista over the past year, and it sure appears to me that XP64 and Vista were test beds for Win 7.

I converted workstation and laptop to 64 bit about 9 months ago. No problems. But I think the only advantage is being able to use 8 GB of memory or more, which may make your system more stable when dealing with large asemblies. But also faster because writes to virtual memory will be less.

2x XP64 workstations (running 2010SP0) + 1x XP32 server (running PDMW) = no problems in 2 years of use.

Licencing is not an issue as far as SW & PDMW is concerned. Merely need to select the required version. Both the DVD & online server offer unlimited accessability to both versions regardless of licence.

Hello everybody,

I would not be so sure with the answer "no problem".

In our case:
We have Windows XP 64 bits with Solidworks 2009 installed in x64 and Excel 2003 with visual basic installed in x32.
On another machine we have Windows Vista x64 with SOlidworks 2009 installed in x64 and Excel 2003 with visual basic installed in x32.
Finally, we have a machine were everything including the OS is in x32.

On the machine x64:
When we use Visual basic macros without any connection to SolidWorks most of our macros are still working.
When we use solidworks without any connection to Visual Basic everything seems to works perfectly.

However, we have one macro we are usually starting using in SOlidworks and then... it is not working.

I checked the libraries... they were identical than in our x32 computer.
I used exactly the same program which was working on our x32 computer... so it is not coming from a programming mistake.

Therefore, I put this on the mismatch between one program in x32 and the other in x64.

We will try a pack office x64 soon to see if it solves the problem...

So to sum up, it is not because two softwares used independantly are working that they will work when you combine them.
