How to check for DFM clearances?

Question asked by 1-HMW5JL on Sep 17, 2009

Does anyone know of any SolidWorks add-ins, web sites, or technical publications that have a comprehensive database of common tool sizes? When checking designs for assembly, I find myself frequently running out to the factory floor and measuring tool sizes (torque wrenches, Allen wrenches, …) to insure access.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have more intelligence built into the hardware in SolidWork’s toolbox. Imagine selecting a socket hex head cap screw and having the ability to select from a predefined list, a common tool to use in fastening this screw. How about a silhouette image of the tool then appears giving the designer the ability to visually check for access or interference. How about a feature in SolidWorks that would perform interference detection against the assembly tool and the surrounding envelope.
