If you want to do this manually you can start with the initial rev. Rename that file to "part"...check in and move it along the workflow as needed. Once that is done checkout "part" and save part_b over that (save as or rename & copy/paste), check in and run it through the workflow...rinse and repeat.
I'm not sure if that is what you are looking for but that is the way to version a file without editing in it place (in the vault)
I had thought of doing something like that, but I doubted that it would work. I'll give it a shot, though it certainly would be tedious doing it all by hand.

Unfortunately I don't think it's that simple.
Getting the files in as a single name is not too tough, its finding and updating all the references that will be difficult.
If you have a lot of files to move in and you want to re-capture histrory, I suggest having an experienced consultant assist you.
I suspected that it would be problematic, Joy. It's not clear if we really need this function but I think you're right about needing a custom solution. Understanding the sort of headaches that implementing EPDM would create is all part of the ongoing evaluation process.
