For automating custom balloon/item numbers in any manner, I
believe your only option would be to assign File Properties (Custom
and/or Configuration Specific).
Eddie
The need that I was trying to fill is that our company
insists that all custom made parts have find numbers between 0 and
199, all purchased parts have find numbers between 200 and 399, all
fasteners have find numbers between 400 and 599, and all
sub-assemblies have find numbers between 600 and 799.
Find numbers are item numbers listed on the BOM and in the
balloons on the assembly drawing.
The only way I have found to do this is to use custom
numbers, one at a time as I am ballooning the assembly, then
generating the BOM. I would like to be able to, after the BOM is
constructed, change the item numbers and have the balloon numbers
change automatically to stay in sync.
In order to maintain tradition (you all know that one!) I
need to be able to change the Item numbers shown in the balloons
and BOM list.
We have a system where custom made parts have item numbers
between 100 and 199, purchased parts have item numbers between 200
and 399, and fasteners have item numbers between 400 and 599.
We currently do this by assigning a custom find number to
each balloon and for each item number in the BOM, but this leads to
errors.
We use an Excel based BOM, and I was hoping that there was a
way after creating the BOM to change the item numbers on the BOM
and then ballooning the assembly.
This does not seem to work. Is there a way to change the item
numbers on the BOM and have the coresponding balloon reflect that?
I haven't used the Excel BOM in a little while, but I seem to
remember that this is possible. I only did it once to try it out
when it was new. I think you need to disable "item numbers follow
assemly order" before it will allow you to edit the item numbers.
This was done by double-clicking on the balloon, I think. I think
it's also possible to edit and re-order the Excel based BOM by
editing the BOM directly (double-click).
Personally, I don't like having the item numbers linked to
the assembly order. This way I can rearrange things without
scrambling the BOM. Or, you can resort the BOM without having to
scramble the assembly.
I have been assigning details in an assembly with the custom
property "detail number", then link the ballons to pull this number
insted of the item number. The same can be done with the BOM. This
seems to work pretty good.
