I recieved a part file from one of our customers and it has two feature managers. How do i get rid of one?
Scott, rather than just moving it out of the way, use it to your advantage. I have both shown, one is for features and the other shows my configurations.
I thought your suggestion sounded interesting, so I wanted to give it a try. so my question is not how to remove the 2nd FM, but how do you get it?
At first I thought you were being a wisea**, since I saw no double lines at either end of the FM. Then I finally found the very thin bar at the top, that is barely thicker than a single line. It is also only slightly easier to grab than the margin setting in MS Word, so I flew over it a few times before I saw the double arrows blip by. Anyway, I got it now.
Here is the bar you need to "pull down" to split into a top/bottom feature tree.
I have both the tree and the feature manager showing sometimes. I undocked the feature manager, and made Solidworks non-maximized. I left enough room to the left of the solidworks window for the feature manager. Then I moved the feature manager to the empty space to the left. Now when I select an object, the feature tree shows up, and it doesn't cover any part of the screen.
Here it is when not editing a feature:

Picked up that trick at SWW from Matt Lombard's presentation.
Thanks for sharing this explanation from Matt's presentation- good tip! Just wanted to let you know that I apprecate detailed responses like this one from you (and others) here on this forum. I have learned a lot from them!
Charles, I have a question. Since I'm still in SW2006, does the split bars act the same as they do in 2006? I mean, I'm having to re-position the bars from time to time because they seem to forget where they were. Is this still happening?
I don't use the split bars! (It works the same, and it still jumps around sometimes)
As you can see from my two screenshots, I get a full length feature tree, and a full length feature manager, so no need to split.
That's the same today. The bars change based on the PropertyManagers coming into that space. I generally either leave the FM area as one, or I drag the bar down to have the tree below and the configs above. The reason for that order is because the hotkey to collapse the tree (Shift-C) only works in the primary pane, which is the lower one. It also doesn't take as long to drag the bar the shorter distance you go. :-)
Wayne, I thought the primary pane was the one with the add-on tabs. We use Smarteam here and it's icon shows up on the other pane. I was hoping this always moving around FM would have corrected itself since SW2006. Oh well, no real big deal I guess.
I can't necessarily argue against your reasoning, but the hotkey works when you have only one pane showing, and it works to collapse the tree in the lower one if you have them split. Therefore my reasoning.
Can you tell me how to undock the feature manager. i would like to have one on either side of my screen. Thanks!
I dont think you can split it on either side of the screen, at least in 2007 you cant.
