Sketch onto loft

I am using solidworks 2009 and I am required to place a sketch on a loft. Essentially the loft is in the shape of a curved shield or a little like a tortoise shell. I have now been tasked with seperating the model into a series of interlocking hexagons or pentagons. Even if I am able to place a sketch on the surface would it wrap onto it? Is there a better way such as using an extruded cut with a thin wall to create these shapes, but again could it made so these cuts wrap to the contours of the body?

any help would be greatly appreciated
