Mating a Cylinder

Hey Everyone, I am new to Solidworks, and i have a question.

I want to mate a cylinder inside my assembly, but am having problems.

I tried using different types of mates, and i can mate correctly to the base as a vertical mate, but not on the horz. plane.

I need to have in the direct middle, but can't seem to find out how.

I was using SolidEdge, and it has a feature to mate by planes, and automatically sets the mate correct.

Am i missing something? Thanks in Advance.

EDIT: nobody? is it that simple of a answer?

Try a concentric mate. Do a search in SW Help for Concentric Mate. From there you can mate to planes parallel or perpendicular.

Not sure if that is what you are after since I am not sure exactly what you question is from your problem description.

If this is not what you are looking for post your assembly models. Zip into a zip file and upload that.

Josh, zipping and uploading your assembly would make it a little easier to see what you are trying to achieve here. Be careful when mating cylinders that you are chosing a "concentric" mate and not coincident as is often easily done. You mate the components using fetaure surfaces or reference geometry typically.

  With it being a cylinder, it seems to not want to mate using the geometry of the part.
  
  Keeps wanting to say it's over defined. Even after I delete the other mates.

    If worse comes to worse you can open each part individually and place a "point" on a sketch in the center of the part and cylinder on the planes that you want parallel. Use the point as your mate. I'm not sure how new you are to Solidworks but when I say point, I'm talking about the asterik thingy you can place in sketches.

    Cylinders should be perfectly willing to be mated using their geometry. Perhaps you've got a 'fixed' mate on it.
    
    If not, you really should post your model so we can look at your problem.
    
    Also, it sounds as if you might need to study the methods of mating components in Solidworks. I think it would be very helpful to you if you would work through the tutorials that are found under the help menu.

      I actually fixed it by doing this.
      
      reference Geometry, created a new plane and mated the cylinder using that plane.
      
      I did'nt think that there would be such a steep learning curve going from edge to works, but works is a lot more touchy about what you do.
      
      But that's not a bad thing. Thanks for the responses, and I am working on the tutorials now. I'll post up my model in a zip as soon as I get done.
      
      EDIT: well I went through the tutorials and they really don't explain to much, because they cover just the basics, but now I have another problem.
      
      For some reason, it will not allow me to make a angular plane to mate my pipe to on the compressor? It has to be set at a 31 deg angle, I have the pipe turned the right direction, but I need it to be defined.
      
      How do you create angular planes in assembly? I tried using reference Geometry again, but it will not create a angled plane???

        You can also mate cylinders using axes. Then mate planes or other features for orientation.
        
        The help section explains how to create an angled reference plane.

This is basic euclidean geometry. You cannot define a plane with a single plane. To define a plane at an angle to given plane, you have to give 2 points or a line to define the plane's location in space. That is what the error message is telling you. Did you try selecting a linear edge? If you want the plane to be coincident with the axis of your big purple cylinder, turn on temporary axes (View->Temporary Axes), then select the existing plane AND the temporary axis of the big purple cylinder. That (along with your 31 degree angle) will define a new plane.

  That it is, and thank you, common sense on part would have helped.
  
  I used reference Geometry, clicked and plane, used my top axis as one, then the face of the base as the other, PRESTO, perfect plane i could change the angle on, and 3d sketch from.
