Here is a true newbie question. When creating an assembly out
of several parts I am unable to display the part colors. Everything
takes on the appearance of the top level part which happens to be a
dark grey molded plastic case. As you might imagine the assembly is
not very exciting looking. I am positive I am missing one check-box
somewhere, but I have clicked on just about anything having to do
with document level or component level properties without any
change.
I have been through all of the tutorials and my two Solidworks books, but none of these resources has any info on this.

This will show your color hierarchy. You can apply the color at the "assembly level", or at the "part level", or even at the feature or face level (in the part). It sounds like you have assigned these parts a color at the assembly level, and you probably want to remove that. Select all the parts (in the feature manager tree), and then go to that same appearance tool in the context toolbar. Make sure to select the assembly level appearance. Then you can select "remove appearance" from the appearance feature manager.
