I used to religiously control whether a part is hidden /
transparent, etc. at the lowest subassembly possible. Then I would
check "use assembly visibility properties..." at the next higher
assembly level so that I knew very well how the visibility
properties would be handled in all of my assemblies.
I would never hide a part from a subassembly when I was in a higher level assembly, and check the "override subassembly..." properties.
With SW 2009, the "use assembly visibility properties..." checkbox seems to be gone.
Where do you control this these days?
(I've been using SW since version 1996 - I love it, but every once in a while I have to re-learn things that have been working great for several years)
