Google says plain carbon steel but that has a density of 7850 kg/m3 but in materials section solidworks it has it as 7800 kg/m^3?

Does it make a difference to you? That's a 0.64% variation. Tolerance stackups could change the weight that much on many parts.
FWIW, I use 0.283 lbs./in.^3 which is 7833 kg./m^3. That's 0.4% and I'm not worrying about it.
Hi,
you can't edit the default material databases.
That's why Frederick Law was mentioning "...new material in a new database..."
..I think that is correct for mild steel but.. you could create your own?
