I am trying to create two view states of an assembly. Think 1) a closed box or cupboard and 2) an opened box or cupboard. I can't seem to be able to create two views of the same box or cupboard assembly and save them as a configuration. What I have done in the past is just save the assembly as a new assembly with the parts in the alternate state I want. I see in drawings that one can use Alternate Position View, but how does, where does, one create and save the views?

Correct Answer

To make a second configuration, you follow what you have been doing when making separate assemblies except you set your configurations to suppress new mates and instead of deleting or changing existing mates, you suppress them and add new mates. Of course there are other ways of doing this (using master sketches to control open and closed). However, stick with the basics for right now until you are comfortable.

Please see the attached. After viewing it and reading the explanation below I'll be happy to answer any questions.

I created a simple assembly consisting of a box and lid, added 3 mates to fully define the position of the lid when closed, and re-named the Configuration "closed".
Next I right-clicked on the third Mate, the one that keeps it closed, and selected "Configure Feature" from the drop-down.
When the "Modify Configurations" box opened, I clicked in the box that says "< Creates a new configuration >" and typed "open", then clicked in the box in the next column to suppress that Mate in this new configuration and closed the dialog box.
This Assembly now has two configurations, one with the box closed and one with it open and free to move.
I suggest turning on the "Configurations" toolbar. It, along with the one for Display States, are the only ones I keep open in models. I find it easier to switch back and forth using the toolbars instead of needing to go to the Configuration tab.
It would be possible to add a third configuration with the lid open at a fixed position, and/or add a Limit mate to the new "open" configuration that lets it be moved between the closed position to a pre-determined open position instead of free to rotate through the box.

No worries Glenn. I got what I needed for now using the mates as Solid suggested, but I am going to look closely at your steps and work through them in SW when I get a chance, hopefully today or tomorrow.
