Continuity fine until knitting

I am new to surface modelling. In this model have used split lines to cut a surface, then lofted between the edges (not 3d curves) to create a smoother transition (shown). 

However, when I knit (no gaps), the continuity looks horrible. Suggestions? This is a common problem I am having. 

The continuity is important for this task.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
