Common forms & template locations

I've been working from home using online licensing ( I could VPN too, but I need my spacemouse ), so I use a email or use a thumb drive to transfer the files I need between systems.

Works well, except some older drawings have a different drawing form attached as my work computer started with older SW versions, so the form locations could be for example, C:\program data\solidworks\solidworks 2017\lang\english\sheetformat. My home computer started with V2020, so the form directories are different. I tried duplicating a dummy directory on each system to place the forms, and call out the same search paths, but it didn't work.

Is there a better way to do this, or am I missing something??

I'll try to help.
1. Can you explain why you need access to the sheet formats for the older drawings? You shouldn't need them to open and edit the drawings. Adding new sheets and wanting to use the same sheet format would be the only reason I can think of, and even then copying an existing sheet, pasting it, then deleting all the unwanted drawing views and notes from the pasted sheets would accomplish the same thing.
2. In any case, it should be as simple as copying the file from the old location and pasting it into the new one. If they have the same file name you'll need to re-name one of them. By the way, if you're using custom sheet formats, and it sounds like you are, I'd strongly suggest saving them somewhere other than in the default location. That will prevent issues like the one you're having. We have ours on a network drive so all the users can access them, but if you're a one-man-show you could keep them on your hard drive.

  Hi Glenn,
  It sounds like the last lines in your comment might solve my issue. Please see the attached screendumps of the same file on both home & work computers. The custom sheet format isn't the only thing gone haywire, as text and dimensions have disappeared too.
  Would placing the forms and templates in a specially named folder - such as C:\Forms - on both systems solve this?

    Yes, keeping all custom templates, sheet formats, weldment profiles, etc away from the SW installation files is always a good idea.

      So as I m mentioned in my original post, I tried the dummy directory and it didn't work.
      I have the .drwdot, .prtdot, .asmdot templates and the .slddrt drawing forms in the dummy directory and the search paths specified in the system options.
      What am I missing??

        You should also move weldment profiles, if you use any. Also BOM and cut list templates.

My question to you: do you use the default template from SW or custom one? Each time you install a new SW release, a new set of default templates is set for your use. you can find out the location from system settings - see below images

The easy way is to open your SW at work and copy all the templates and save to your home computer. Run SW and go to setting and point the file locations to the templates you save on your home computer

Once you installed a newer version, all file location should change to new one.
VPN to work, open 2020 and check file locations in options.
Copy those file to your computer at same location (Folder).
