Show PDM Workflow State, Latest and Local version on drawing

Is anyone showing the current PDM Workflow state, Latest Version and/or Current Version of the slddrw file on the drawing somewhere?  When this first came up I thought it should be straight forward.  The more I look into the more difficult it gets.

At first I thought we could add PDM variables then use attribute mapping to propagate them to the custom properties of the model.  I knew that keeping those variables up to date might require extra work.  As I think about it more I realize I cannot keep changing the Version data card variables without a lot of extra versions.  So I looked at "version free" variables, but those cannot be mapped.

I'm back to the starting point with this and the only idea I can come up with is to not use PDM variables at all and build a Solidworks Add-in that updates the custom properties on file open.  Would use PDM API calls to get the data.  Feels like I'm reinventing some wheels here.  I'm thinking people have to be doing this already somewhere?

Thank you.
