Break link to saved component

I am using Solidworks to create models of store fixtures using various lengths of extruded aluminum.

Previously I used Mechanical Desktop 2.0. Various profiles of extrusions were saved in a library directory. From there, I could insert them as parts into my assemblies and then localize them. Once localized, I could change their length without affecting the saved library part. All changes to the various parts were saved with the assembly.

Is there a way to do this in Solidworks? I would think this would be obvious, but it has me scratching my head.

Any insight would be appreciated.
