Less triangles = smaller file size. A rectangular prismatic object requires only 12 triangles to represent it. Every other solid requires more, so the file gets bigger. The same reduction in size can be seen by simply turning off the saving of tessellation data from the Document Properties....Image Quality options page.

Along the same line...and if I remember correctly, this info is from a post by J. Mather:
For part files, drag rollback bar all the way up and save the file.
At the destination, roll to the end.
