Using SolidWorks 2016 on a Dell Precision 7520 with 24G RAM.
I find this when creating a pattern in an assembly: I start typing the dimensions for the pattern and Solidworks tries to update everything with each keystroke. This makes creating a pattern very slow.
Is there a way to turn off this feature so Solidworks won't try to do anything until I hit enter?

Just shooting in dark, turn off the instant3d and see if that helps.
I'm only on 2016. I don't think I have instant 3d. Searching system options for "instant" yielded nothing.

I don't know about such a setting.
What about setting the number to 1 , then type the distance and then set the number back to what you want.

It looks like you are making a large pattern e.g. 25x30. Try to make a small, e.g. 5x5, and then the next one using the previous one - 5x6. This way is faster!

Down at the bottom of the pattern propertymanager is a box of Options. If yours is set to Full Preview, set it to Partial Preview. If it's already set to Partial, file an enhancement. There should be an option for no preview, like on some of the surfacing features like boundary, loft, sweep, etc.

EEdit: Instant3D is located on the Features tab if you'd like to give it a quick look. I believe they were introduced in 2016.

Instant 2D was off, but turning it on changed things. I'll have to work with it a while and see if that's what's doing it. I also found the instant 3D button. I guess it's always been there and I've ignored it. I'll experiment with that, too.
