Interference in multi body part from vendor

Hi,

I am trying to mesh a part that was supplied by a vendor. The part is a multi body part with some of the bodies interfering. Most of the interference is from threaded parts. I have removed as many interfering bodies from the part as I can. However, there are a couple of bodies that I would like to keep and the interfere. I have attached a photo showing the interference.

The question, what is the best way to fix this interference so that I can mesh the part?

Also, I am trying to do a thermal simulation.

Try combine them to remove interference.

You might also need to do some extrude to combine or remove interference.

Hi, thanks for the reply.

I did manage to use combine and indent to remove the interferences.

If I run the interference detection none are reported.

However, if I try and run the thermal simulation it reports that at least two bodies are interfering. Maybe I have missed something or have some wrong settings?

I've attached screenshots of what I get.

My crude-but-effective technique in tracking down local geometry or meshing issues is the "assembly cut". Simply cut away all but one slice of the model and get that slice to mesh. Then move the cut a bit at a time, leaving more of the model, until the problem shows up again.

Hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I have managed to get the part to mesh now. It took a bit of iterating but in the end I roughly did the following:

1) Removed as many bodies I could that were not required for the thermal analysis (mostly threaded bolts in this case)

2) Used extrude to remove any threaded areas

3) Used combine or indent to remove any interference issues

4) I had to iterate on how much to combine the bodies. The mesh would fail if I combined everything to a single body. Eventually, I got it to work with two main bodies (each combinations of the vendor provided bodies)

5) The part meshed with after setting to "curvature based mesh" and adjusting the minimum element size.

I think I can use this general idea to modify other vendor provided parts for analysis.
