Any one crashing just going from 1 drawing to another?
I have had simple changes and Solidworks Crashes at the drop of a hat.
Software is completely dung infested garbage. Dassault Systemes needs to focus on better kernel and error capture so system crashes can be mitigated. Other software manufacturers have already accomplished this.
. I've not seen it myself... so,.. it could be a few things...
- Graphics Card Driver (change driver)
- Performance Setting - "Enhanced Graphics" (turn off.. or on and test?)
- Bad Install (repair, reset registry or reinstall)
(man.. I'm really tired of this dumb moderation system... SW Corp... just stop it!)
I thought it was just me. I downloaded 2021 SP1.0 a few weeks ago and have had nothing but problems with ridiculous crashes. From switching from a part to an assembly, placing a hole wizard hole in a part and even today not doing a thing. I got up and left my office for 5 min and came back and SW was gone. I'm the only person working in SW in our small company. Very frustrating.
Most of my problems I'm blaming on my graphics card (Radeon Pro). However, there have been a few times where trying to print a drawing will kill SW. With no warning at all. I had to save as PDF and print from there. Dumb.....
I'm not "upgrading" again if they don't have this stuff fixed by SP4.
Need to stop Moderating and perhaps put more attention on code quality, testing and adding real value = creating a program that works.
I downgraded my video driver to the "released" certified for my card. Same garbage. Random dumps. Switching between drawings. My guess is they didn't test the certified drivers for 2021?
Not sure how they can legitimately claim they add value to our work flow by adding features. Features we essentially can't use because the program is so unstable.
I am beyond the point of no return. I can't go back or I would. (2019 sp 5)
My experience so far with 2021:
Drawings (sheets) are constantly getting corrupted when trying to save them
Random crashes - This is with multiple operations. There isn't one thing I can nail down as causing it to crash. I've had it crash when saving, crash when doing an extrude, crash when constraining sketch points, etc., etc.
Every "new" version of Solidworks has issues. For the $1000's that we spend on this software, we shouldn't be DS's beta testers and quality control. Luckily I still have 2020 installed which seems to be mostly stable at this point, (although it still crashes occasionally), so I'm able to use that but when other outside companies send me a 2021 SW file I can't do anything with it at the moment. For the money we pay, I would think DS could afford a QC team that actually checks the software. If they already have one, they either need more people on it or more qualified people on it. I haven't kept track but the amount of time (money) that's been lost due to software issues is probably in the thousands at this point. I've been considering switching to Inventor but Inventor isn't as streamlined as SW so I'd rather not but I can't continue to deal with the constant issues with it.
My PC specs are above and beyond what's required. I know video card drivers can cause issues but the fact that they don't cause issues in any of my other software means the problem lies with SW, not the driver. I'm not a programmer but I'm assuming some extra coding on SW's end would be able to solve the video card driver issue that has plagued SW since I started using it.
Maybe instead of putting out a new version every year, work on the current version so that it's bug free. If you want to add new features, add them via a service pack, not an entirely new program. Every version of SW I've used has been mostly unusable until at least the second service pack. If I bought a new car that had as many problems as a new version of SW, It would be at the mechanic more than it would be in my driveway.

That's exactly what I tell my VAR and every opportunity I have.
The "NEW" features don't really help if I am constantly having to restart and do over.
I spent almost 2 hours with my VAR yesterday - he was good took notes... we'll see what happens.
I thought I was the only one saying this and the fact this is only Beta software. I agree about the car analogy.
I never remember Pro/E or Creo crashing on a new spin and if you did they fixed in within a week or so.
Switch to Creo - they capture crashes and you don't lose all your work. Not only that but you can spend 1/3 the cost of a computer.
I think we should all get refunds.

I've 2021 since SP0.
So far no problem and planning to completely switch over.
I have 2020 SP4 as primary use.
Using 2021 for small new projects.
Not any worse then 2020. Maybe a bit faster.
Also, totally no-certify hardware and driver
Thanks for the suggestion of Creo. I've never heard of it but it looks pretty capable. Everyone would have to learn the software but I'd rather take the time to do that than spend more money on something that hasn't and isn't working properly. They have a trial. I'll have to take a look at it and see. If I like it, hopefully they're comparable in cost.

I have run Creo on an i3 with much less video with greater performance. Solidworks SUCKS! Maybe if you'r making trinkets...
I would really like to know how much they pay the people that use the software and tout productivity.. I have lost more time since I loaded SW 2021 sp1 (I was on 2019 SP5) ....

Well as has been said before test early SP releases before committing to it if Solidworks is vital to your company. It's not much comfort for the users who have committed to the new version now with no way back.

I've been using SolidWorks since '98, yes I'm old. Most releases have been good. This latest one however has been the worst I've ever experienced.
"Test early SP releases" is exactly the problem. I shouldn't have to test software that I'm forking out $1000's of dollars for. I also don't want to waste man hours having employees test software. If DS wants to pay them for the testing then I'm all for it but I don't see that happening.
A few little insignificant glitches I expect and can deal with. Finishing a 4 sheet drawing, 3 times now, only to have it be corrupted, and having to start over, shouldn't happen with a "final release" piece of software. The only reason I did it 3 times is to see if there was something I was specifically doing that was causing the issue but the problems are random. It also shouldn't take months of multiple service packs to get it working correctly. I still have issues with 2020 SP5 occasionally.
And that's part of the problem. 2019 was all but unusable for me, but others said it worked without incident. Then in 2020 some of those people saw the same symptoms others did in 2019.
If you follow these threads, you would never upgrade because there is always a group of people who the latest software harms.
About a year ago one of the Solidworks guys came on here and said DSS was putting a major effort into One and Two. I'm not sure how long it takes for us to see the results, but this isn't encouraging.
I'm stopping at 2020 SP5, and will be investigating other options.

Ensured per SW Var even that graphics driver was certified.
And enhanced was off.... /on - no differences.

And the Apply button in the dialog box don't do anything. Always disabled.
Steve I can understand your frustration.
Yes I agree the user shouldn't be testing CAD software but this is commercial software and consumer rights are far different. Having used Solidworks for a long time and lots of other CAD, quite frankly all CAD software has issues and Solidworks is not especially bad and far from the worst.
Like all CAD software sooner or later there will be a year where there is just a plain bad release. Is it this year? I don't know, sometimes there is small group with specific problems who just have continued crash problems while the rest of the community is pretty issue free.
Generally speaking it will be mid summer - autumn before I see any Solidworks 2021 files from any clients. Being that not that much will change now days with new releases I'm never in a hurry to load the next version on.
You will find plenty of complaints about every CAD software on forums across the web. The amount of times I spoke to clients and heard we are having no end of problems with our software what's Solidworks (or what ever I was using at the time) like?
None of this will probably make you feel any better at the moment.

Don't forget to make new templates with new versions, I've been stung by that before. Old templates can really cause big issues.

Can you open an existing one, save as, and be good to go? Or do you have to use SWX default templates to start?
