Drawing BOM shows generic bolt description instead of actual size??

Hi All,

Stumped on this one. Seems like a simple enough move but I'm getting 2 different resutls. I added a simple BOM to my assembly drawing the other day which showed the bolts correctly with the size (attachment OLD BOM). I lost the drawing for some reason so made a new drawing and everything appears the same except the hardware now shows ai_bolt instead of the actual sizes shown in the BOM (attachment NEW BOM). I don't see anything different in the options box for the BOM from what I thought I had set a few days earlier (attachment BOM OPTIONS). I did some googling and don't see anything directly pointing to this question, only something about the bolt configurations causing this but I never set anything other than the defaults previously and they always showed properly. Any help is appreciated!

Looks good to me:

I thought the second one would be set to Filename, but it's ok.

You could test if you can change things. Maybe you can force solidworks to reinitialize the settings that way.

  Hi John,
  Hope all is well with you. I have the files at home. I can upload tonite to here. I have alot of custom props for the parts but never do any for toolbox hardware (use out of box settings). I usually do nothing complex, just use hole wizard then just add fasteners from the right side design library and pick the type of bolt and lengths I want. Can't imagine what could have changed to show the fasteners in BOM differently. Thanks for the reply.

  Here ya go John. The zip is the drawing and all associated parts plus the assembly. Real simple assembly but need hardware showing properly.

    I tested you files and get the following result in SolidWorks 2019 using a default BOM template:
    This is how I did it:
    I opened your fastener and could see you are using the option (1) to use "User specified Name", which refers to Description (2)
    Then I created a BOM with the following settings:

      Thanks for the informative response! I don't know what happened with my computer. Its been acting weird lately. Files have not been saving (hence me making the new drawing of what I created previously), I need to push the power button numerous times to get any power for it to boot up, etc. I am using my old trustworty i7-2600 which is ancient but worked. I ordered components to build a new PC. Perhaps something happened with files getting changed in the last few days, who knows. Anyways, I will try to check out my settings tonite. I am pretty sure I am using all defaults for the toolbox and BOM creation. That's interesting with your pic2. What did you click to get in the hardware configuration for the bolts (configuration properties)? I usually only see this when I start adding bolts. I am still on SW2015 so maybe I can't get the same dialog box as you with the #'s 1 & 2 inside.

        That's interesting with your pic2. What did you click to get in the hardware configuration for the bolts (configuration properties)?
        I simply opened a bolt from the assembly (RMB open...)
        
        When I wanted to check toolbox settings via Windows start > Toolbox settings 2019 (also 2020) the icon appears in the statusbar, but the expected dialogbox never shows...
        So I can't investigate further because my system seems to be broken too...

        Are you saying to RMB a bolt within the assembly and choose the highlighted button to open the bolt? If so, I get something different (see 2nd snip) when choosing to open the bolt: (below is snip from different model than what we are talking about)

        Yes, that is what I did. But my Toolbox is not working as it should anymore . So my experience might be of no help to you.

        I'm still on the old SW2015. Menus are probably different? This version has been solid for me.

        I don't have that option but nothing is checked off in the boxes that I do have.

        Thanks so much for your responses. This helps me. Never went in here before for toolbox settings. Question though. Since its a read only file, I would have to check appropriately for each bolt in assembly if needed for the description if I change it?

        It shows you have the same in your files as I have. You don't have to change anything in your files.
        I think it is a setting in toolbox settings, but I cannot check it on my broken system.
        Can you open your Toolbox settings and show a printscreen here? Probably the last tab.

        So here's my conclusion of the matter. I extracted and opened the same zip file as attached above. And using my work computer I reopened the drawing file. Walah. All appears as far as toolbox hardware (bolt sizes) as they should. Last nite, I opened the same file on my home computer (which I'm planning on wiping tonite) to check the settings for tool box. They are all the same as my work PC yet the BOM results show different. Below is a snip of Page 3 toolbox settings which I think are out-of-box defaults. The only way I could get the BOM to change to show the size from the generic "ai_bolt" to the proper configuration name was to open the "read only" toolbox bolt from the FMT within the assembly file. And from there go to configuration and RMB to get to properties. From there, I changed "part name" to "configuration name" and this changed the drawing BOM to reflect the size instead of generic (see 2nd snip). But keep in mind this is "read only" file so I didn't want to change it. When I close the bolt file, all reverts back to generic description again. And these are the same settings as here at work. So I think something is messed up with SW software at home. Who knows but I'm hoping when I build the new PC and reinstall SW all will be fine. Time will tell.
        
        Work PC settings - this might be set to "part name" on home PC hence the part name showing in BOM instead of config name - I forget but changing these settings did nothing to BOM on drawing:
