I recently did a hard drive upgrade on my machine and had to deactivate and reactivate (don't forget to do this with SW if you are changing major components of your PC) and I never noticed this before but SW Visualize is not perpetual...
I'm currently using one of our two lock-node licenses, but this is outrageous that Dassault has done this! What else can I say...

Working with STL files from Solidworks into Blender is painful and very time consuming when it comes to assemblies with more than a few parts in them.
I haven't had luck with a step file importer, parts came in a mess.

...yeah,... stl... no way... Modo is the most likely alternative now.. and personally I'd work with FBX.. or another format which can translate/share the data from SW.
Same with KeyShot. License is yours, upgrade if you feel necessary, way easier to deal with than Visualize. And I believe they're still running a deal for importing SW files specifically. They were a little irked when DS kicked them out of SWW last year......

I learned never to use the so called free add ins, before you know it, they are gone.
You can buy a perpetual license of Visualize Standard (I think LIN SHAODUN shows this on one of the links) but from what I understand it is locked into the year and works on the same system of subs as Solidworks.
So a 2020 version of Visualize wouldn't open a 2021 native Solidworks part/assembly.
I think the perpetual licenses are aimed at users with Solidworks Standard who need rendering.
Richard, that is good info - and I didn't know that. So if I have a 2020 edition of Visualize Standard, I should be able to use it forever with any SW file that is 2020 or <?
I was just more than a little alarmed when I saw my license manager update screen in which it states that my SW2020 listed as "Never" and Cam and Visualize as expiring April 30 of next year - only 5 months away. If it is like you state Richard, why is it listed this way?
So it sounds like what you are saying is that Visualize can be purchased from the VAR as a separate item from your standard, professional or premium license?
Actually Mark I had a quote from my Var last week for Visualize standard as standalone perpetual, so as with Solidworks you have a price for the seat and then subs for the year.
In theory you could opt out of the subs and say, taking this moment, you would have visualize 2020sp5 & 2021 sp1 (or less forever)
Obviously once you opt out of subs native files from Solidworks 2022 onwards would not work, but you would have a option to use Parasolid & Step which should retain your assembly structure and a certain amount of colours/mat info.
I have a seat of Solidworks Standard so I don't get the 'Free' if you stay on subs Visualize Standard.
TBH if you intend to stay on subs and own a seat of Solidworks higher than Standard it makes little sense to buy the perpetual Visualize license because you will have it anyway.

It does expire on April 30th if you do not renew your SolidWorks maintenance subscription. You will need to re-activate your license with the SolidWorks activation servers to get a new clock after you paid your renewal. It does not reset automagically.

it was clearly communicated right from the beginning, that these additional solutions (wich can be bought separately) comes for free, when the license is under active subscription.
